Over 5,000 years in the making...

Jewish life, culture and identity is alive and well and living in Owen Sound where Beth Ezekiel remains the last surviving small town synagogue in Canada. In fact, Owen Sound is by far this country's smallest community with an active synagogue! Now we invite everyone for a rare glimpse at what keeps us together.

Rhythm & Jews is a lighthearted and festive celebration that features a program designed to appeal to people of all faiths. It's our way of saying thank you Owen Sound for the many years of respect and goodwill we and our ancestors have enjoyed here in the Scenic City.

The lineup of talent for the event is impressive. The food is a taster's paradise.

Please join us as we mark over a century of Jewish culture and tradition in Owen Sound and help us preserve the building that made it all possible!

 Klezmer Music!

The Gypsy Jive Band started in Owen Sound in the mid-80s playing Jewish Eastern Eurpopean Klezmer. Having to adapt the Klezmer style to match the sensibilities of Grey County audiences, the group's Klezmer has been called "Ethno-fusion Country and Eastern (and the kitchen sink)." It is still traditional, yet accessible to all, with a few surprises. The band has performed at the CNE, Ontario Place, numerous folk festivals, weddings, bar/bat mitvahs, and much more.

Pop Favourites!

Since moving to Owen Sound about 20 years ago, Bobbi Nicholls has performed as a drummer and a singer with several rock, country, jazz, and blues bands in the Grey Bruce region. She will perform songs made famous by various Jewish composers and artists.

Storytelling!

Miller Lake residents Leslie Robbins-Conway and her husband Paul are the foundation of Voyageur Storytelling, experts at "charging the batteries of the imagination." A pillar of the Beth Ezekiel congregation, Leslie is one of Canada's most illustrious storytellers, and the founder of Jewish Storytelling Arts. Throughout their performance, Leslie and Paul will treat you to glimpses of Jewish folklore with tales of compassion, grace, and humour.

Look Around! Eat!

The intermission will give you a rare opportunity to see the synagogue, ask questions, and view cultural artifacts. You'll have the opportunity to nosh on authentic Jewish cuisine that will take you beyond the bagel into such traditional favourites as latkes, gefilte fish, lox, and more!
